Exploring a New Horizon: Foreign Caregivers Co-Living with Seniors

Introduction

Caring for our senior loved ones is a responsibility that tugs at our hearts. As we navigate the challenges of an ageing population, innovative solutions emerge. In Singapore, a pioneering initiative is underway, blending foreign caregivers with shared living spaces for seniors.

Living Alone: The Struggles of Seniors

Seniors living alone often face isolation and limited support. The Ministry of Health (MOH) and Ministry of Manpower (MOM) recognized these challenges and embarked on a groundbreaking project – the Shared Stay-In Senior Care Services sandbox.

Innovation in Elder Care

Collaborating with private companies like Red Crowns Senior Living, the project aims to explore the feasibility of having foreign live-in caregivers for several seniors sharing an apartment. These caregivers become an integral part of a shared living model that transcends traditional eldercare.

The Vision Behind Red Crowns

Founded in 2021 by Joshua Goh, Red Crowns Senior Living was born out of a personal struggle to find quality residential care for his father. The company’s unique assisted co-living model matches four seniors in a unit, cared for by two foreign domestic workers.

Government and Private Sector Collaboration

Five private companies, including Red Crowns, were shortlisted for this innovative project. The goal is to widen eldercare solutions in Singapore, offering seniors and their families round-the-clock support.

Regulatory Sandbox

The MOH’s regulatory sandbox approach allows the government to work closely with the industry, understanding and supporting new, innovative services. It ensures effective, efficient, and appropriate ways to address the evolving needs of Singapore’s ageing population.

Facing Challenges Head-On

While Red Crowns awaits the findings of MOM’s investigation, the company remains committed to its mission. A collaborative meeting held in August with MOH, MOM, and AIC paved the way for Red Crowns to actively participate in the Shared Stay-In Senior Care Services sandbox.

Centralised Hiring and Proposals

Red Crowns submitted a proposal for centralised hiring of foreign caregivers, aiming to streamline the process and establish a quota system based on the number of seniors served. The company actively engages in discussions to contribute valuable insights into the challenges faced by senior co-living service providers.

Affordability and Financial Aid

With rates ranging from $2,200 to $5,000 per month, Red Crowns is actively exploring ways to bring down costs. Financial aid schemes, including the Seniors’ Mobility and Enabling Fund, Home Caregiving Grant, and Pioneer Generation Disability Assistance Scheme, are considered to make services more affordable and accessible.

Empathy in Action

In the journey towards becoming the preferred care provider, Red Crowns expresses gratitude for a government that listens and adapts. Their commitment is not just to a business model but to effectively solving the challenges faced by senior co-living spaces.

Looking Ahead

The Shared Stay-In Senior Care Services sandbox is a beacon of hope for seniors and their families. As we anticipate positive outcomes, the collaboration between the government and private sector exemplifies a progressive approach towards eldercare.

Conclusion

In the heart of this initiative lies the belief that everyone deserves quality care as they age. The blend of foreign caregivers into shared living spaces for seniors is not just a project; it’s a testament to Singapore’s commitment to crafting innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of its elderly population.
